Andhra Pradesh’s act of raising the height of the check dam across the Palar river has been declared as an act impacting the fundamental rights of the people of Tamil Nadu, by the Supreme Court after Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa today said the government has filed a case against the same.

On July 18, 2016, the state government filed a petition in the Supreme Court, said Ms Jayalalithaa, in a statement issued on Saturday.

She said in the petition the state government has asked the apex court to declare Andhra’s action of raising the height of the check dam across the Palar river without Tamil Nadu’s permission as affecting the fundamental rights of the people of her state.
Ms Jayalalithaa said the petition also requested the apex court to order Andhra Pradesh to bring down the height of the check dam to previous levels.

The petition had also said the Supreme Court should order Andhra to ensure that the water from Palar and its tributaries reaches Tamil Nadu.
