Chhattisgarh official removed after video shows him hitting man for violating Covid norms

Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel has removed District Collector Ranbir Sharma who was seen slapped a man and smashing his phone in a video that went viral on social media on Saturday.

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel on Sunday removed IAS Ranbir Sharma as Surajpur district collector for slapping a man who allegedly violated Covid-19 norms in the state. Ranbir Sharma has been removed with immediate effect.

A video of the incident showed Ranbir Sharma slapping a man who was, as alleged, violating the Covid restrictions, enforced to contain the spread of the infection. The youth was reportedly out to buy some medicine. Ranbir Sharma was also seen asking the police officers who accompanied him to beat the man and ordered an FIR against him.

The video was shared multiple times on social media and drew criticism from several quarters.

As the video went viral, Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel said the incident was brought to his notice through social media. Bhupesh Baghel condemned the incident and said that such acts won’t be tolerated. The chief minister added that instructions have been issued to remove Ranbir Sharma with immediate effect.

The IAS association also condemned the incident and said, “The IAS Association strongly condemns the behaviour of Collector Surajpur, Chhattisgarh. It is unacceptable & against the basic tenets of the service & civility. Civil servants must have empathy & provide a healing touch to society at all times, more so in these difficult times.”

Meanwhile, Ranbir Sharma has issued an apology but blamed the man for his “insolent behaviour”. The district collector said it was “due to the youth’s insolent behaviour that I was agitated and thus slapped him.”

Gaurav Kumar Singh has been appointed as the new District Collector of Surajpur.
