Kulgam. A Hizbul Mujahideen militant and an army man were killed in a day long gunfight in Nowbug Kund area of Devsar in Kulgam district on Tuesday.
A police official told Rising Kashmir that acting on specific information, SOG Kulgam and 9RR personnel of Army cordoned off Nowbug Kund area in Kulgam early this morning. He said as the combing operation was going on, militants fired on the search party.
“The fire was returned by the troops, triggering an encounter. In the ensuing gunfight, a militant and an army man were killed and a policeman injured,” the official said.
He said the troops were continuing the combing operations in the area and ascertaining whether any other militant was present there. The slain militant was identified as Mudasir Badroo resident of Yaripora in Kulgam district.
“He was most wanted Hizb militant and was active since 2013. He was an A category militant,” the police official said. He said Mudasir was a B. Tech pass-out.
The official said the injured policeman has been hospitalised and doctors have termed his condition as stable.
The internet services were snapped in Kulgam and Anantnag districts instantly after the gunfight broke in Kund, Kulgam.
Meanwhile, police claimed that a hideout belonging to Jaish e Muhammad was busted by troops in Laam forest area of Tral in Pulwama district.
“We busted a militant hideout in Laam forest area of Tral and recovered logistic items from there. The gunshots, which were heard in the area in the morning, were the probing shots fired by the army during a cordon and search operation. No contact was established with militants during the operation and subsequently the operation was called off,” a police official said.
