Online news platforms will have to register themselves, says I&B Minister Prakash Javdekar

Speaking at an event organised by Republic TV, Javdekar said, “I’ve formed a cell within the ministry to look at social media and the digital media and immediately clarify if there’s fake news. We believe in media freedom. But any freedom has to be responsible freedom. And therefore, we’ve started to put together a draft of a proposed amendment to the Press Registration Act, where more than one lakh magazines, newspapers and periodicals are registered in India with RNI. So, we are asking digital news portals to also register.”

Javdekar said that he will seek suggestions to his proposals for a month starting December. The union minister also said how it was Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who had first  ‘discovered the power of digital media and used it very effectively in the 2014 elections.’ He said that the ‘flip side’ of the digital platform was that it could ‘create fake news’ also adding that this is his ‘real trouble.’
