WASHINGTON: The October 2016 issue of America’s top news publication Time Magazine bears a quote from the Holy Quran on its cover page. A remarkable initiative and move in the backdrop increasing Islamophobia and Donald Trump’s particularly malicious election campaign in which he has not minced any words in expressing his disdain for Muslims.
The magazine features the Quranic Ayah (Verse): ‘Whoever saves one life, saves all of humanity’ has been used in reference to Syria Civil Defence (also known as White Helmets) – a volunteer group whose members risk their own safety to rescue people from rubble as soon as a bomb is dropped.
“They come in after the bombs have fallen and free people from the ruins, from the rubble of the houses that have been bombed,” said Ole von Uexkull, executive director of Right Livelihood Award Foundation about the White Helmets.
The phrase is part of the 32nd verse of Surah Al-Ma’idah which is about Adam’s son Cane killing his brother Able.
“On account of this, we prescribed for the children of Israel that whosoever killed a person — unless it be for killing a person or for creating disorder in the land — it shall be as if he had killed all mankind; and whoso gave life to one, it shall be as if he had given life to all mankind. And Our Messengers came to them with clear Signs, yet even after that, many of them commit excesses in the land.” (Al Quran 5:32/33)
