Egyptian citizen Abdel Ati died in hospital of heart disease and kidney dysfunction, say doctors
An Egyptian woman deemed the world’s heaviest woman died in an Abu Dhabi hospital on Monday morning only one week after celebrating her 37th birthday.
According to UAE newspaper The National, 37-year-old Eman Ahmed Abdel Ati died from complications linked to her condition.
Abdel Ati, who was receiving treatment at Abu Dhabi’s Burjeel Hospital, died “due to complications related to her comorbid condition, including heart disease and kidney dysfunction,” according to the hospital.
The rapid deterioration in her health followed months of treatment after weight-loss surgery at a hospital in Mumbai, India.
Before travelling to India for surgery in March, she weighed some 500 kilograms. After a liquid diet in hospital and subsequent bariatric surgery, she weighed just 176.6 kilograms.
In May, Abdel Ati arrived in the UAE to continue treatment, including a year-long course of physiotherapy.
Her transfer from India was made on the insistence of her sister, who accused doctors in India of lying and jeopardising her sister’s life.
The Mumbai hospital rejected the allegations as untrue.
Suffering from morbid obesity since childhood, Abdel Ati appealed for help in October 2016, asking Egypt’s President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi to help save her life.
The Alexandrian woman’s trip to Mumbai was the first time she had left her first-floor flat in 25 years.
